Appetite suppressant medications act in part by stimulating that part of your nervous system that prepares your body for action. These physiologic changes can include raising your blood pressure and pulse. A rise in a persons pulse can be felt, but not increases in blood pressure. Increases in blood pressure can cause damage to your heart kidneys and vascular system. So it is very important to monitor your blood pressure at home, as well as at our clinics. We urge our clients to purchase a home blood pressure machine and check their blood pressure at least weekly. If you were on any blood pressure medications, you should check your blood pressure more often. A reliable device can be purchased at most pharmacies, Walmart, and many big box stores. Make sure that the machine comes with a cuff that fits your arm. The cuff size will be indicated on the box. This will require you to measure the circumference of your upper arm, above the elbow, before you buy the device. Apply the cuff to your arm as described in the directions that come with it. Take your blood pressure while reclining and when you’re not excited and are relaxed. Record the date and the pressure so that it can be compared over time. Please call us if you have any questions or concerns about your blood pressure. But always contact your family physician as well. And always inform all your medical providers when you are taking appetite suppressant medications.
